A massive redevelopment programme is being planned by the Southern Railways or SR at the busy Egmore railway station. The main aim of this would be to change the experience of driving in and boarding trains at this important railway station. Sound`s Incredible right!!
It is now said that this massive redevelopment programme would transform the swathe of land present between Gandhi Irwin Road and Poonamallee High Road in Chennai. The 33 acres of land that is currently under-utilized would be added to the Rs 800 cr Amrit Bharat Station scheme.
In the future, 2 new station buildings, 2 six floored multilevel parking lots and a pick up and drop area would be coming up. The superb piece of information is that once completed the Egmore station space would extend till the point where Gandhi Irwin Road joins Dr Nair Road.
Information collected is that the landscape around the Egmore railway station would transform as the objective would be to sync the railway station with the surrounding cityscape. Pathways would be added for easy flow of pedestrians between buses, cars and autos etc. To reduce the walking distance of the passengers, the pathways, pick-up and drop points would be designed.
No mingling of trains no congestion:
It was pointed out by Mr.B. Vishwanath Eerya, divisional railway manager that the departure and arrival trains would not mingle and create congestion. He hinted that the entire concourse for departure of the trains would be one level above the platforms and the people would be able to get airport-like facilities. The arrival concourse would be present at another end of the station.
After entering the new station building, people would use escalators and lifts to the departure concourse and wait for announcements about trains. There would be food courts, retail shops and other entertainment options present in the space.
