Demanding action to be taken by the transport dept regarding revising the fares, the auto drivers on 25th August would be taking part in a rally to the Secretariat at Fort St George. It is known that the HC of Madras already gave a direction about it a year back.
According to Mr. S. Balasubramanian, working president, TN Auto Thozhilalar Sammelanam, rallies would be conducted as various protests have not yielded any results. On 9th May 2023, the auto drivers even went on a hunger strike and it caught the attention of many. He threw light on how the TN govt has not yet developed its own ride hailing app plus not revised the auto fares. It was in 2013 the auto fares were revised is known.
An inter departmental panel headed by the JC of enforcement was formed in 2022 by the TN govt after the HC of Madras gave its order to revise the auto fares in February. On 12th of May, the panel heard the views of the unions and on 13th May the panel heard the views of the associations. From then onwards, the transport dept has been remaining silent only and no action has been taken regarding the revision of auto fares.
