The price of tomatoes has sharply risen across the country, including in Tamil Nadu State, over the past month. Tomatoes were being sold at an astonishing high of up to Rs. 160/- per kg at the Chennai Metro City Koyambedu wholesale vegetable, fruit & flower supermarket. Moreover, they were fetching prices of up to Rs. 220/- per kg in local retail vegetable shops.
In this context, the quantity of tomatoes being delivered to the Chennai Metro City Koyambedu wholesale vegetable market has been steadily increasing over the past week. This surge in supply has subsequently led to a gradual reduction in tomato prices. Just yesterday (Sunday, August 13th), tomatoes were being sold at a mere Rs. 50/- per kg within the wholesale vegetable supermarket at Chennai Koyambedu. Meanwhile, at retail vegetable shops, the price settled at Rs. 70/- per kg.
Market traders dealing in vegetables have indicated the possibility of further declines in tomato prices in the near future.
