The shocking piece of news is that the newly constructed bus terminus at Kilambakkam in south Chennai is submerged under the water now due to the heavy sudden rains. It is known that this new bus terminus was constructed with the main objective of controlling the traffic on the GST Road.

After the sudden heavy rains here, motorists have found that travelling through this place was a nightmare. Even after just a hour of heavy rains, the newly constructed bus terminus has been flooded totally. This has taken many by surprise now. It must be taken into account that with more than 5lakhs sq ft covered by concrete, the storm water has flooded the entrance of the terminal and adjacent GST Road due to poor groundwater percolation.

An  officer from Highways dept explained that adding to the Hydrology flaws the National Highway again has heavily used cement along the center median. He added that the pavement has denied the water its basic instinct of reaching the groundwater table.

It was in the year 2019 the construction of a new bus terminus at Kilambakkam started at an estimate of Rs 380 crores. Now, the construction has been completed and the new bus terminus is expected to be inaugurated in June 2023. Point is that the inauguration was postponed to July and now after another delay the inauguration of the new bus terminus is expected to take place in September.

No proper plan leading to delay in opening:

The new bus terminus at Kilambakkam has been constructed without a proper plan and hence the opening has been delayed. This was as per some sources. The entry and exit of the buses at this new bus terminus would be an issue as there are no separate ways for the buses to enter the National Highway. This would result in creating more traffic especially in the peak hours. It was mentioned that the absence of a proper drainage system in the construction of the new bus terminus would lead to water getting pushed to the NH, choking the traffic fully.

Information gathered is that before this new bus terminus was constructed in Kilambakkam there was no flooding at all. This was confirmed by a few local residents here.  It was pointed out by a tourist cab driver that GST Road was a nightmare during the rains and several stretches of GST Road had been a death trap due to water stagnation in the slopes and bends.
