The CMRL or Chennai Metro Rail Limited would be operating feeder services for the first and last mile connectivity. The commuters could use small electric vehicles to reach the metro stations when the phase 2 metro stations open to the public. It is important to note that the116.1km phase2 of CMRL is likely to open between 2026 and 2028.
According to an official from CMRL, the government wants them to operate small e-buses and e-autos. He threw light on how modalities like procurement, routes, operation, charging points for vehicles etc must be planned and later on the govt approval must be sought. He hinted that when the Kilambakkam bus terminus opens buses could be operated between the bus terminus and airport as there would not be train services available.
It must be recalled that CMRL had failed to operate an efficient first and last mile connectivity across phase-1 corridors. The proposal for the first and last mile connectivity in phase 2 has now come at this point of time. Truth is that in all the 41 metro stations in Chennai there is still no proper last mile connectivity. Instead of operating the feeder services on their own, CMRL could operate electric vehicles through MTC and this was mentioned by few experts.
