An innovative project is set to transform the way residents in Chennai Metro City handle their electricity consumption. The installation of smart electric energy consumption meters is scheduled to commence before the end of this year, ushering in a more convenient and efficient system for consumers.
Under this new system, consumers will receive their electricity consumption bills as Short Message Service (SMS) notifications on their mobile phones. The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board has issued an alert, urging Chennai Metro City residents to verify and update their cellphone details with TANGEDCO (Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation).
These smart meters will be equipped with telecommunication technology and connected to a central server. Consumption data will be recorded using dedicated software. As soon as the installation is completed, the system will automatically record consumption details and send them as SMS notifications to the respective consumers` cell phone numbers.
The State Government of Tamil Nadu`s Electricity Department has initiated a tender for the installation of 3.03 Crores of these Smart Meters, encompassing all installations except those in agriculture and hut areas. The selection of the appropriate organization for the installation will follow the tender evaluation process, with the goal of commencing installations by the year`s end.
At present, there are 2.20 Crores of registered consumers under the State Electricity Department. To ensure a seamless transition to the new system without any disruption in electricity supply, consumers who have changed their cellphone numbers are advised to verify and update their details with the Electricity Department.
This modernized system will enable consumers to receive SMS notifications regarding planned power cuts, electricity consumption bills, and important announcements. To update their mobile phone numbers, consumers can visit the website www.tangedco.org, navigate to the "Billing Service" section, and select the "Mobile Update" option. They should then register their new or corrected mobile phone numbers and provide identity proof such as a driving license, Aadhar card details, or other relevant documents, which will be reviewed and approved.
This forward-thinking initiative is poised to simplify the lives of Chennai Metro City residents, making electricity billing more convenient and accessible than ever before.
