Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa has ordered an increase in the ceiling (annual family income) from Rs 24,000 to Rs 72,000 for beneficiaries. The ceiling was revised as many poor families could not apply for the marriage schemes since the income limit as per the existing norms was very less.

The government is currently implementing five different types of marriage assistance schemes, namely Moovalur Ramamirtham Ammaiyar Memorial Marriage Assistance Scheme, Dr Dharmambal Memorial Widow Remarriage Assistance Scheme, E V R Manimmaiyar Memorial Poor Widow`s Daughter Marriage Assistance Scheme, Mother Teresa Memorial Destitute Women Marriage Assistance Scheme and Dr Muthulakshmi Reddy Inter-Caste Marriage Assistance Scheme.

While there was no income ceiling for Dr Dharmambal Memorial Widow Remarriage Assistance Scheme, Dr Muthulakshmi Reddy Inter-Caste Marriage Assistance Scheme and Mother Teresa Memorial Destitute Women Marriage Assistance Scheme, other schemes have limits for the annual income of beneficiaries.
