It is not often that leather jacket fishes are caught at the Kasimedu harbour.
There is a buzz now in the Kasimedu fishing harbour in north Chennai. The fishermen are very happy now as they have been catching a new type of fish in the last few weeks. It is worthy to note that in the last one month more than 1000 tonnes of leather jacket fishes were caught here. This is the first time since 2010 or once in a blue moon the fishermen have caught leather jacket fishes here. As leather jacket fishes are purchased by restaurants etc, these fishes bring huge money for the fishermen.
It is superb to mention that the thick skin of these fishes could be used to make filters of sieves. It was later revealed by the Fisheries dept that one trawler on an average would bring about 10 tonnes of fishes. According to a trawler owner it was very clear that one of his boats brought in more than 5 tonnes of leather jacket fish. He added that since 2010 these types of fishes were not caught by the fishermen. These fishes are sold for Rs 230 per kg in the wholesale market and for Rs 300 in the retail market. There is more demand now for the export of these fishes.
