Metropolitan Transport Corporation or MTC in Chennai is cash-strapped is well known.

Soon, MTC would be generating non-fare box revenues by setting up fuel stations at 5 important bus termini in Chennai.

The MTC has identified Gandhi Nagar in Adyar, Arumbakkam MMDA, Mogappair East, Perambur and Padianallur as the bus terminuses to set up fuel stations.

Involvement of major oil companies:

Proposals have been sought by MTC from major companies like IOCL, BPCL and HPCL etc to set up fuel outlets in the above mentioned locations. The minister for transport, Mr. SS. Sivasankar has announced in the assembly that fuel outlets would be set up initially under the dealership model in the places owned by state transport undertakings for the sake of additional revenue.

It is learnt that BPCL has emerged as the highest bidder for the Arumbakkam- MMDA, Mogappair East and Padianallur bus terminals etc. Point is that HPCL got Adyar and Perambur bus terminals.

Outsourcing etc:

The sources have revealed that the license period for the outlets to sell petrol, diesel and lubricants etc would be for 15 years with an escalation of 15% every year. It must be noted that the work force would be obtained through outsourcing. The MTC would deploy one supervisor for each of the 5 bus terminals in Chennai.

The superb piece of information is that by this MTC would be able to generate about Rs 50 lakhs per month from the 5 fuel outlets. Monthly rental and commission for sale of petrol and diesel are included in the revenue.
