The Judges of High court have condemned the Southern Railways or SR for not installing the surveillance cameras in even 10% of the railway stations across Tamil Nadu. It is known that many mishaps take place now at the railway stations.
It must not be forgotten that in 2016 the murder of a woman software engineer at the Nungambakkam railway station made sensational news across India. Point to be noted is that the HC had taken the case on its own initiative and it had issued an interim order to ensure public safety in important places in TN. This also included ensuring public safety in the railway stations etc.
Day before yesterday, the case came for hearing before Chief Justice S.V. Gangapurawala and Justice P.T. Adhikesavulu. On behalf of the Railways dept, it was mentioned that the surveillance cameras were installed in 35 railway stations out of total of 442 railway stations in TN and the cameras would be installed in the remaining stations by 2024-25. This comes to less than 10%.
The Judges expressed their unhappiness regarding the absence of surveillance cameras even now in many railway stations even after the brutal murder of a young woman at the railway station.
