The important news is that the suspension of suburban trains from Tambaram to Chennai Beach until 3:30 pm on Sunday, 8th October 2023 has resulted in heavy overcrowding at the bus stops in the city. The public visited Chennai from nearby places on Sunday for shopping etc in their own vehicles and this led to heavy traffic pile on the important GST Road in Chennai.
It must be noted that many passengers of the suburban trains did not know that SR had cancelled EMU services from 10am to 3:30 pm on Sunday for the sake of track maintenance works. Point is that this cancellation has already been announced by SR on Saturday itself.
There was a heavy crowd in places like Pallavaram, Chromepet and Tambaram bus stands etc yesterday as the passengers scrambled for other modes of transport. It is learnt that people who already knew about the EMU cancellations used their own vehicles to go to Chennai from nearby places. This created a huge traffic pile on the GST Road in Chennai.
In areas like Meenambakkam etc, CMRL operated metro trains usually yesterday and this led to reduction in the disruptions for the passengers. The traffic pile up eased up after Meenambakkam airport.
