If you are of the opinion that the most important problem that is present in Chennai city is the presence of bad roads, open drains or pollution etc, this piece of news would surprise you!!
The parking of the vehicles has become a huge headache for many now in Chennai. This is mainly due to the increase in the number of vehicles now when compared to the past. It is a bitter truth that the parking areas that have been designated in the city are either costly or too few in numbers.
This has resulted in zigzag parking of the vehicles on the Chennai roads. To change the situation, GCC or Greater Chennai Corporation has now come out with a plan.
Creation of new designated parking spots:
Many empty spaces have been created now in the city by removing the vehicles that have been abandoned. As a result of this, the civic body is having plans to convert these empty spaces into designated parking spots. It must be recalled that as many as 1308 abandoned vehicles have been identified in Chennai city. As many as 51 vehicles have been taken back by the owners.
It is learnt that atleast 154 unclaimed vehicles and all the abandoned vehicles removed in September would be given away through e-auction process.
Regulation of parking policy:
Regulation of the parking policy on the Chennai streets especially in the commercial hubs has been urged by the residents and by some social activists etc. Truth is that the removal of abandoned vehicles would not provide a solution to the traffic congestion
Need for zero tolerance approach:
There is a need for a zero tolerance approach now to streamline parking of the vehicles in Chennai city. This was according to Mr. Raghukumar, a civic activist. He spoke about how there would be parking of the vehicles on the roads as long as the TN govt allows the vehicles owners to park their vehicles on the roads free of cost. He stressed the importance of having in-house parking facilities for the homes and apartments etc. Without having their own parking space, people buy multiple vehicles etc now and park the vehicles on the roads, footpaths etc creating issues for others.
Many people now want GCC to collect an amount of Rs 5500 per month for on street parking of cars etc in the residential places in Chennai in front of the houses. As a result, the residents would be forced to have a parking lot within their homes.
It was mentioned by a resident from George Town in north Chennai that removing the abandoned vehicles from the roads was a superb move but converting the spacace into parking space would be another kind of encroachment.
