Ampa Skywalk Mall in Aminjikarai in Chennai is a very busy locality is well known to us.
Now, to reduce the pedestrian accidents here, the state Highways dept would be constructing a new foot over bridge or FOB at an cost of Rs 15.2 crores.
It is learnt that the proposed FOB would be making its presence felt in the junction of Poonamallee High Road and Nelson Manickam Road. There is now a continuous movement of vehicles here and this has been making the lives of pedestrians very difficult. It must be noted that despite the presence of s traffic single here the vehicles that travel towards Anna Arch flyover tend to drive at high speeds. This has made the road crossing difficult.
Overcrowding of pedestrians:
There is always traffic congestion in this place due to the overcrowding of pedestrians especially in the evenings. Many go to the hospitals, shopping malls, educational institutions etc. Every hour, more than 1300 pedestrians use this important stretch on an average. The traffic police personnel are not able to handle the crowd here. It is true that the waiting time at the traffic signals goes even more than 120 seconds.
It is superb to note that the state Highways dept has floated a tender to construct a covered FOB here by October 2024. This would help in avoiding unnecessary delays and ensure safer commuting.
It is learnt that there would be staircases on both sides of the FOB plus 5m wide walkways, 4 escalators, 4 elevators, bridge would have ramps etc.
