Under the Chennai City Partnership Programme in 2 phases, CMW or Chennai metro water would call bids to install 25 lakhs water meters in both commercial and high buildings belonging to core and added areas in Chennai.
The documents for DPR were being prepared through a consultant Steady Taps. In another 2 months, the tenders would be called for. In merged areas in Chennai where a comprehensive water supply scheme has been completed, a total of one lakh water meters would be fixed. It is learnt that those buildings that have high water consumption have been identified and these buildings would be fitted with water metres soon.
In core places in Chennai, 1.5lakh water metres would be fixed. It is now said that the individual consumers would be covered later on. Simultaneously the work on both the phases would be carried out though the project has been divided into 2 phases.
Installation of smart electromagnetic meters:
Smart electromagnetic meters with IoT sensors would be installed to make sure that the water was used judiciously and to reduce non-revenue water through leaks and thefts etc. About 24095 water meters have been fixed till now and out of those 12708 devices have automated meter reading or AMR.
