Is the purpose for which the bus shelters were built in Chennai solved?
In other words, are the bus shelters in Chennai user friendly?
This is the question Chennai public are asking now to GCC or Greater Chennai Corporation. It is known that 3 bus shelters at MMDA Colony were built for the sake of commuters. The problem now for many senior persons and kids in the bus shelters here is the height of the metal benches. T
he senior citizens and kids are finding it difficult to sit in these metal benches. Apart from this issue, huge trenches have been dug in front of the bus shelters here and due to this many have been finding it tough as they have to jump the width of these trenches. As per a resident from the MMDA Colony, the bus shelters have been built without any thought. He spoke about how a platform would have been useful here.
Lack of link between the footpath and the bus shelter has been creating issues for many now in the bus shelter at EVR Periyar Salai in Chennai. This was brought out by a frequent visitor to this bus shelter. He was of the opinion that if the seats were constructed little lower then it would have been user friendly for many senior persons. The same issue regarding height has been making many lives difficult in Egmore and in the College Road etc
There were also complaints from the public regarding the over head shade in the bus shelters. Many now want the design to be changed so that the bus shelters could accommodate motorists to take cover under these bus shelters during the rains. It was later mentioned by a senior officer from GCC that discussions would be held with the engineers to repair the bus shelters and for making changes in the design etc.
