As many as 100 interior and arterial roads in Chennai have been identified by GCC now for diversions, potholes fixing plus for other activities like expediting SWD works, clearing pavements, encroachments etc. Traffic monitoring committee of GCC that was created just 2 weeks back carried out the traffic assessment drive.
Details about the committee:
It is worth mentioning that the committee comprises representatives from police dept, Tangedco, CMRL, CMW and BSNL etc. During the peak and non-peak hours, the committee would be doing its work to identify the reasons for traffic pile ups at important hotspots in Chennai. Every week, a report would be submitted and it would be reviewed by the deputy commissioner ( Works). Point to be noted is that in a first such report issues like non-movement of breakdown vehicles, abandoned vehicles on roads and platforms, potholes, SWD works etc were identified by the GCC.
The surprising piece of information is that the Royapuram zone in GCC comprising Pantheon Road, Casa Major Road, N.S. C Bose Road etc had the highest number of congested stretches. Overflowing sewage, improper positioning of EB boxes, illegal road crossings and improper garbage bins positions etc were cited as the reasons behind the congestion.
Mr. J. Radhakrishnan, GCC Commissioner later spoke about how the combined field visits by the officials would give a better perspective to understand traffic and arrive at the solutions.
It was mentioned by some officers that necessary diversions would be needed to be made in some interior stretches. For clarity of routes, road markings would have to be done.
