The existing ROB or rail over bridge near Padi on the Jawaharlal Road or IRR in Chennai would be widened into a dual 5 lane bridge. This would be carried out by the state Highways dept. In addition to this, the narrow approach road towards Padi would also be widened.
It was revealed by some officers from the Highways dept that the present 3 lane ROB would be widened into 5lane on both sides. He added that ROBs approach road and small stretch would be widened into 5 lanes with a central median and pavements. This would be done for seamless movement of the vehicles here. An amount of Rs 101 cr would be spent totally for the ROB widening plus for the approach road etc.
It is noteworthy that the existing ROB near Padi on Inner Ring Road lies between Villivakkam railway station and Korattur railway station with 3 lanes on both the sides.
The official source has explained that IRR is a 5lane road present on either side of the centre meridian. It must be noted that the 1.1km stretch from Padi junction ROB narrows to a 3 lane carriageway. From Villivakkam to Padi on a small stretch near the Padi railway station, the road narrows into 2 lanes. This has been causing traffic bottlenecks and accidents etc here.
There is a huge need now to widen the ROB near Padi now for the seamless movement of vehicles etc. this was brought out by an official from the Highways dept. From other states, many vehicles come to Chennai through this road and the road is present on the industrial corridor. He threw light about how in recent times traffic here has become more resulting in traffic snarls etc. To match with the existing carriageway of IRR, the existing carriageway must be widened.
