Now, a comprehensive report is being prepared by the 6 member committee that was appointed to investigate the functioning of the health insurance scheme of the chief minister of TN. By the month of November, a report would be submitted. This was according to the health minister of TN Mr. M. Subramanian.

The health minister later spoke about how the committee headed by the former director of National Health System Resource Centre Dr. T.Sundararaman have travelled to many districts and visited hospitals, doctors, para-medical persons and even the patients to know how the participation of the private hospitals could be increased plus how the scheme could be extended etc.

Information collected is that more than 1.4 cr families are registered under the scheme. This was as per the state records. Under this health scheme, every family would get covered up to Rs 5lakhs every year for more than 1000 ailments at the govt hospitals and empanelled hospitals in the govt sector.

The doctors, patients etc have pointed out drawbacks of this health scheme. Point is that the scheme delays and denies treatment plus it puts pressure on the government doctors.

It is worthy to mention here that many private hospitals that have reserved less than 10% of beds for the patients under the insurance schemes have been making the lives of the patients difficult. In other words, the patients are being forced to go to the government hospitals. As a result, there is more pressure on the government hospitals. This was mentioned by the TN Govt Doctors Association.

Availability of health insurance schemes for people across economic groups:

It is now brought to light that the 6 member committee would be exploring various options so that the health insurance scheme would be available for people across all economic groups. Middle and higher economic groups would also be considered under this health insurance scheme.
