In the retail as well as in the wholesale markets in Chennai, the fish prices have surged now. This has caught the attention. The reason for the sudden increase in the prices of fishes was due to supply drop.
After almost 2 months, the demand for fish varieties have gone up and this was as per some fish traders. In the coming days, the prices of fishes would increase further as NE monsoons have commenced in TN. Truth is that the boats would not venture into the sea if warning was issued by the meet dept and by the dept of fisheries etc
According to a wholesale fish trader at the Kasimedu fishing harbour, the fish sales were dull for a few days even after the end of Puratasi month. He added that now there is a decrease in the fish supply and due to that the prices have gone up. The surprising piece of information is that more than 90 trawlers went fishing and 5 to 10 tonnes of fishes were caught.
At the wholesale market, Vanjiram meen was sold for Rs 700 per kg and in the retail market it was sold for Rs `1300 to Rs 1400 per kg. Sankara meen and nethili meen were sold for Rs 300 per kg. In the same way, crab was sold for Rs 300 per and prawns for Rs 300 to Rs 500 per kg. The sudden increase in the demand from the customers has led to retail markets differing drastically.
