During the monsoon season due to the heavy winds and rains etc, there are chances of huge hoardings falling down on the motorists etc. To reduce this, the GCC has asked the govt departments to get license for hoardings in their buildings plus to strengthen the structure as per the norms & to remove illegal hoardings etc.
Yesterday, a meeting took place between GCC officials and officials from the Southern Railways. At the meeting, issues related to illegal hoardings and licensing by the authorities were discussed.
Truth is that due to the large number of hoardings that have been erected on the govt lands of CMRL, SR and Highways etc, the risk of hoardings falling on the pedestrians and motorists remains high especially in the NE monsoon season. The GCC has removed as many as 203 illegal hoardings from several locations in Chennai.
On the railway lands near Central Square, Dr MGR Central station, Ripon buildings, Central metro and park station etc, more than 17 hoardings have been erected. Safety norms were not followed while erecting many present hoardings and the structures might collapse in the cyclone during the NE monsoon season. Point is that GCC has asked the agencies either to remove the hoardings or obtain licences as per the safety norms.
