Only if the last mile connectivity is seamless and affordable, the public transportation would be successful!!
This holds true in Chennai also. Majority of the commuters in Chennai prefer their own vehicles because the commuters would have to walk or ride to the nearest metro station or suburban railway stations in Chennai. As many use their own vehicles, there is so much traffic congestion in the city plus there is also now huge pollution making breathing difficult. It is known that in Chennai metro trains and suburban trains are the fastest modes of transportation and suburban trains are the cheapest.
For providing the last mile connectivity for the commuters, the govt agencies have already taken steps. It must be taken into account that CMRL has launched electric vehicles for this sake and GCC has implemented a bicycle sharing system. The bitter fact is that both these initiatives have become a failure in Chennai now.
To make the last mile connectivity more effective in Chennai, the government must operate vehicles that cover a certain radius from the public transportation station. Point is that the parking charges must be reduced for the passengers who depend on the public means of transport to reach their destinations in the city. This would make many use metro trains and suburban trains etc.
It is noteworthy that the bicycle sharing system must be made more viable and must be extended to the interior roads also. It is well known that currently cycle stations are located only on the arterial roads.
