Identifying areas that are at huge risk of chronic inundation now in Chennai!!

As part of its City Disaster Management Plan, the GCC or Greater Chennai Corporation has now identified vulnerable locations in each zone that would be prone to chronic inundation in the NE monsoon season.

It is worthy to note that the data recorded during the 2015 floods in Chennai has revealed that 37 areas in the city have very high vulnerability. In these areas, the inundation levels might reach over 5 ft. Under high vulnerability, there are 84 locations in the city and the inundation levels between 3ft and 5 ft. The data revealed one are with medium vulnerability and inundation levels of 2ft to 3ft. There were as many as 184 locations in Chennai with low vulnerability and inundation levels of less than 2 feet. Information is that in total 306 locations were classified.

It is noteworthy that in 2017 no areas with very high or high vulnerability were recorded. There were 23 medium vulnerable areas and 182 low vulnerable areas.  In the year 2018, one area with medium vulnerability and 52 areas with low vulnerability were recorded.  In the years 2019 and 2020, as many as 19 and 23 low vulnerability areas were recorded.

As many as 561 areas in Chennai with varying degrees of vulnerability were recorded in the year 2021. It is important to note that in 2022 as many as 37 areas with one are of high vulnerability,8 areas of medium vulnerability and 28 areas of low vulnerability were identified. Now in 2023, the process to identify vulnerable areas in Chennai has been going on.
