Chennai has introduced new speed limits for vehicles within the city, aiming to tackle the growing traffic congestion and enhance road safety. With the ongoing traffic challenges, including the influx of residents from nearby towns and the increasing use of two-wheelers, the need for regulatory measures has become evident.

The heavy traffic in Chennai often leads to long queues on the roads, especially during peak hours, which can result in delays and even road accidents. Tamil Nadu already grapples with a high rate of road accidents, making it imperative to take action to reduce risks.

To alleviate traffic congestion and enhance safety, the Tamil Nadu government, in partnership with the Chennai Corporation, has rolled out these new speed limits. The Chennai Police has urged motorists to strictly adhere to these regulations. In light of the 62.5 lakh vehicles operating in Chennai, following the speed limits is not just about curbing violations but also ensuring the safety of all road users.

A committee, led by the Additional Commissioner of Police, Chennai Metropolitan Traffic Police Department, has reviewed and adjusted the speed limits that were initially set in 2003. The new maximum speed limits are now as follows: 60 kmph for light vehicles, 50 kmph for heavy vehicles, 50 kmph for two-wheelers, and 40 kmph for autos. In residential areas, the maximum speed limit for all vehicle types is 30 kmph.

The Tamil Nadu government has given its approval for the implementation of these new speed limits, which have come into effect as of today. Motorists are urged to comply with the updated regulations to contribute to a safer and more manageable traffic environment in Chennai.
