If you happen to go by the Putheri Lake in Pallavaram in south Chennai, then you would be surprised to come across white foam floating on the lake!!
The bitter truth is that sewage is being let into this important lake. The flow of untreated sewage and effluents has led to the formation of foam here and this was according to some experts. The leather factories located in Pallavaram and Chrompet were responsible for this foamy condition of the lake. This was pointed out by Mr. T. Swaminathan, water expert. He added that the GCC must keep an eye on the discharge of effluents from the factories so that the lakes don`t get spoiled.
It must be recalled that in 2017 and 2018, both the south as well as the north ends were renovated at a cost of Rs 40lakhs. The residents here spoke about the garbage that was dumped in 2020 from the transfer station on the Radial Road.
As the neighbourhood do not have garbage bins, the public dump garbage in the lake or burn near the lake etc. This was brought to light by a resident from Pallavaram. Bitter truth is that those living near the lake have been facing many health issues now. Continuous exposure to contaminated air and water is a huge issue now for many here. The residents mentioned that they were worried about the long term effects of the exposure.
The issue would be solved soon by the underground drainage system project that is underway. This was according to Tambaram Corporation Commissioner Alaghu Meena.
