Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has ushered in a new era of convenience for commuters by introducing digital QR-based tickets in collaboration with PhonePe. This initiative aims to streamline the ticketing process, allowing passengers to bypass long queues at ticket counters.
The QR-based ticketing system, launched by CMRL Managing Director M A Siddique at Nandanam, enables passengers to book digital tickets directly through PhonePe`s Switch platform. The service retains the existing 20% discount, providing added value to commuters.
In the initial phase, the system allows for the booking of single journey tickets, with plans to introduce return journey tickets and smart card recharges in subsequent phases.
To book tickets on PhonePe:
- Open the PhonePe app and navigate to the Switch section.
- Under the Taxi & Metro category, select the Chennai Metro icon.
- Specify the origin and destination stations, along with the number of passengers.
- Complete the payment via UPI.
- Upon successful payment, a digital QR code will be generated within the PhonePe app. This QR code should be scanned at the entry and exit gates of Metro stations for a seamless journey.
This digital ticketing system not only enhances convenience but also aligns with the current digitalization trends in public transportation. PhonePe has also extended its collaboration to other metro systems, including Hyderabad Metro, Mumbai Metro, and Delhi Metro.
As part of a festive offer, commuters can obtain e-tickets for up to six people simultaneously from a single device, facilitating a hassle-free travel experience.
According to CMRL data, the WhatsApp QR code ticketing system has been utilized by 9,34,882 passengers between May 17, 2023, and November 15, 2023. Additionally, the Paytm QR Code ticketing system saw usage by 9,26,301 passengers between August 4, 2023, and November 15, 2023. These numbers reflect the growing popularity of digital ticketing solutions among metro commuters.
