The frequent overflow of sewage turning the road into a mess!!
This has been happening on the 100 ft road in Velachery and is making the lives of many difficult. The bitter fact is that the motorists here crinkle their faces in disgust. It is noteworthy that the main sewage on the 2.5km road which cuts across the lake in Velachery collects sewage form AGS Colony, Ram Nagar, Murugu Nagar etc. The 2.5km road was laid some 30 years back when the population in Velachery was low.
Now, there are many high end showrooms and malls present here and Velachery has become one of the leading residential and commercial hubs in Chennai. It was highlighted by the secretary of AGS Colony Residents Welfare Association Geetha Ganesh that sewage was overflowing on the road atleast twice in the week. She spoke about how the manholes were below the road level and how when sewage becomes more than the capacity it would leak from the cavity around the lid.
It was brought out by a resident here that in the 2015 floods sewage mixed with rain water flooded the interior roads and entered many houses creating many issues.
The presence of 12 pumping stations nearby was not able to cater to the needs of increasing population here. A clog in the main sewage on the 100 ft road here was cleared and this was according to Mr. R. Vijayakumar, engineer of metro water area 13 ( Adyar).
In the future, many high rise buildings would be coming up here with CMDA planning transit oriented development corridors. This was according to a class1 contractor of CMW. He added that the metro water must keep pace with the development to note the extent of augmentation of infrastructure before implementing them.
