Soon, a committee would be formed and this committee would visit every school before reopening to check for any damage due to the recent cyclone. On Thursday, the school education dept gave orders to all the chief education officers to form the committee.

It was brought out by a press release that the schools would have to be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected and debris must be removed. It added that the areas must be checked for any poisonous animals or plants etc. To prevent the students going within the 20feet of the perimeter, the perimeter of the schools must be barricaded. This was because many schools were present in heavily inundated areas. The press release mentioned that the damaged classrooms should be locked and barricades must be placed on buildings that need to be reconstructed.

Other important works that would have to be done in the schools before reopening are covering of open wells, whitewashing of the school kitchens and repairing of the stoves, arranging the provisions for drinking water and checking of toilets and electrical wirings etc.

The school education dept has requested PTA to help and has asked the headmasters of the schools to visit the schools from Friday. This would be to ensure that the schools were fully ready before reopening. In Chennai and in the Thiruvallur district, the schools and colleges would be closed on Friday also. Now, the teachers are confident that the cleaning works will be completed on time.

According to an official from the school education dept it was confirmed that just 20% of the schools in Chennai are in bad condition due to the recent heavy rains. By the end of Friday (as the cleaning would be carried out 24/7), the schools would become ready for reopening.
