On Tuesday, 19th December 2023, the TN school education minister Mr. Anbil Mahesh Poyyamizhi mentioned that the women teachers working in the government schools could wear any dress of their choice. It must be noted that the headmasters and officers in some districts have been insisting the women teachers wear saris to the schools.
The minister spoke about how he came across many messages on the social media platforms regarding the discomfort of wearing saris in the classrooms. It is well known that there is already a GO regarding the dress code for the govt employees. It is not mandatory for the teachers to wear saris in the classrooms. Truth is that women teachers could wear any dresses of their choice that meet the guidelines in the government order.
Few women teachers expressed their thoughts and spoke about how this new announcement would help many women teachers in the urban places. They were of the view that the women teachers in urban places would be comfortable wearing churidar and salwar kameez etc. Now, there is enough clarity regarding the types of dresses female teachers can wear in the schools in Tamil Nadu.
