There is good news for the Chennai residents now!!

From the month of January 2024, the 800MW thermal power plant that is being constructed at Athipet in north Chennai would become operational.

It is known that the average power demand in TN is 14000MW. Point to be noted is that the power demand decreases during the winters to 8000MW and increases during the summers to 18000MW.

To meet the power demand in TN, the electricity board not only does its own power generation but it also procures power from private wind companies, central govt and other private companies to meet the power demands. In this situation to meet the power demands, TNEB or Tamil Nadu Electricity Board has been building an 800 MW power plant at Athipet in north Chennai.

The important piece of information is that the power generation would start from January 2024 onwards. It must be recalled that the inauguration of the power plant was originally planned in 2019 but got delayed due to the Coronavirus pandemic I 2020. Information is that the coal for the power plant would be brought from Talcher & IP Valley belonging to Odisha state and from theTelangana state based Singareni coal mines etc.  A request has been made to the central govt to supply coal from the Odisha state based Mahanadi coal mines also.

About 6% of coal would also be imported from foreign nations and for that permission has been obtained from the central govt. It is now mentioned that this new power plant at Athipet would be fully operational. As per some officials from TNEB, it was clear that the electricity demands for the summer could be met with the generation of power from the new power plant in north Chennai.
