Good news for ration card holders: An important change in the offing!!

Posted on: 22/Dec/2023 11:34:43 AM
As a welfare measure for economically backward citizens in Tamil Nadu, essential grocery items such as rice, sugar, wheat, etc., are sold at ration shops at reasonably lower prices. Lakhs of citizens benefit from this initiative. Additionally, during festive seasons, the government offers concessions, and relief items are distributed through these ration shops.

On the technological front, the State Government of Tamil Nadu has implemented various advanced measures for ration distribution, including the adoption of a biometric system. With the introduction of smart cards, household leaders or family members can visit ration shops, register their fingerprints, and utilize the biometric system for ration item distribution.

However, it has been observed that the biometric system frequently encounters failures, leading to complaints about delays in ration distribution. In response, the Tamil Nadu government has initiated efforts to implement iris (black pupil of the eyes) registration technology for ration card holders. Activities in this regard are currently underway, and it is expected that Iris Registration Technology will be implemented in 36,000 ration shops within the next month.

Information suggests that the setup of iris verification equipment and printers for providing receipts will commence in the coming days. Additionally, steps are being taken to address maloperations that have been frequently reported.

It is noteworthy that `Point of Sales` (PoS) equipment will be used for the distribution of essential grocery items, and measures are being expedited to prevent the reported maloperations.
