Illegal dumping of garbage has been a huge issue in Chennai for quite some time now. Inspite many steps taken by GCC, illegal dumping of garbage etc has been happening in the city.
Now, the solid waste dept belonging to GCC has issued a circular to the officers to form a Regional Enforcement Team to monitor illegal dumping of garbage and debris in water bodies within its limits.
On 20th of December, a circular was issued to the regional offices present in north, central and south Chennai. It stated that a team would be headed by zonal assistant executive engineers and would comprise SWM and conservancy supervisors, conservancy inspectors, sanitary inspectors, tax collectors etc. Information gathered is that the group would monitor illegal dumping of garbage and debris and would impose fines in Cooum & Adyar etc that are maintained by the GCC.
It is noteworthy that GCC oversees 33 canals of length 53421m in Chennai city. It was later mentioned by the chief engineer of GCC Mr. N. Mahesan works were being done with the PWD and WRD with some assistance from private agencies. For the desilting works, amphibian equipment and robotic multipurpose excavators etc have been used by GCC and this was stated by the civic body. In the last 56 months, about 1231 tonnes of water hyacinth and 1897 tonnes of construction waste were removed by the GCC.
