An order has been issued by the transport commissioner Mr. A. Shanmugha Sundaram to allow the autos registered in the Chennai District Transport offices to ply up to CMDA limits.
A circular was sent by the transport commissioner and according to the circular there was an order asking the autos registered in Chennai district transport offices on the basis of contract vehicles to obtain the approval of the concerned district transport officer to travel to Chengalpet etc.
Point to be noted is that the Chennai boundaries have been extended up to Chengalpet, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram. As a result, autos registered in the local transport offices in the areas including Chennai are not prohibited from entering the Chennai Metropolitan Area or CMA. The autos must be given a license that would allow the autos to travel in the Chennai Metropolitan Area defined by CMDA in the future.. By this, the autos would be able to travel freely within the CMA defined by CMDA for houses and businesses etc.
It was brought out that the order has prevented the imposition of fines on auto drivers for crossing the city limits. The order was welcomed by Mr. S. Balasubramaniam, TN Auto Workers Union (CITU) executive president, Mr. A. Zahir Hussain, general secretary of Right Voice Drivers Union.
