The water tank at Guduvanchery is being converted into a fresh water source and this was pointed out by WRD or water resource department. The work regarding this has been accelerated by the WRD, It is now brought out that after rejuvenation work gets completed the fresh water source at Guduvanchery could be used for both irrigation as well as the drinking water source for several southern suburbs of Chennai. Now, nearly 60% of rejuvenation works have been completed.
It is noteworthy that the water body in the Kattankulathur block spread over 20 hectares is an important source of irrigation for 62 hectares of land. This huge tank was affected by pollution is known to us. From the Guduvanchery water tank, the surplus water would flow to Adanur tank and then into Adyar river.
It was revealed by some officers from WRD that the Guduvanchery tank bund had many breaches after the recent floods due to cyclone Michaung. To deflect sewage, measures are being taken to change the inlets and to construct a peripheral drain, By strengthening the bund, the capacity of the tank would be improved. Inflow from catchment areas and water bodies flow into the tank.
Information is that the storage of the tank would increase by a minimum of 5to 10% and it could be used to supply drinking water in areas like Urapakkam, Guduvanchery, Maraimalai Nagar and Vandalur in south Chennai.
