Don`t be surprised if you reside in North Chennai and if you suddenly come across reading zones in the parks there!!

Point is that the residents will now have a small library-like set up closer to their houses in between green space. Thanks to the northern region of GCC for setting up reading zones in 2 parks in the Royapuram zone now.

The objective behind this was to promote reading habits among the public plus to provide access to books for the kids. In this week, reading zones would be set up in 8 more parks in north Chennai. On a pilot basis, the reading zones would be launched in 10 GCC parks in north Chennai.

Various places where reading zones would come up in the GCC parks would be MRF Garden and Poonthottam CPS parks in zone 1 in Thiruvottiyur, VS. Mani Second Main Road and MMDA Park in zone 2 in Manali, Padmagiri Park phase-1 and KKR Garden Park in zone 3 in Madhavaram, GNT Road Ansa Garden and Jeeva Park in zone 4 in Tondiarpet etc.

On Wednesday, reading zones were launched in Royapuram zone based Raghavendra Park and May Day Park. Mr Katta Ravi, GCC Regional Deputy Commissioner, North explained that GCC launched the initiative of reading zones in the parks in the north Chennai on pilot basis. He added that the objective was to provide access to books in areas that predominantly have slums plus to inculcate reading habits among the public etc.

What type of books will be available?

There would be short stories, biographies, novels etc at the reading zones and this was according to some GCC officers. The superb piece of information is that the public would have free access to these books. It is mentioned that the users must enter (the details of the book that they read) in the register and keep the books again in the box after reading.

Timings:

The public would be able to access the reading zone in the parks from 8am to 12pm and then from 4pm to 8pm. The pubic would be encouraged to donate books
