These days, it has become very common to see heavy traffic congestion from Thiruvanmiyur to Uthandi on the East Coast Road or ECR for a distance of 14.6km in south Chennai.
To reduce this traffic congestion and to explore the possibility of constructing a 4 lane elevated corridor from Thiruvanmiyur to Uthandi on the ECR in Chennai, the state Highways department would take up a feasibility study soon.
According to the finance minister Mr. Thangam Thenarasu it was clear that the construction of a 4 lane elevated corridor would take place in the coming year. He mentioned this during the TN budget speech. To implement iconic world class road infrastructure projects in TN, incorporating best management practices across the world etc, a statutory body TN State Highways Authority would be created by the TN government. In the current session, a bill to establish TN State Highways Authority would be introduced.
Mr. Thangam Thenarasu spoke about how by this move there would be significant investments in the road infrastructure development by means of public private partnerships or PPP. Information collected is that in the budget an amount of Rs 20043 has been allotted for the Highways and Minor Ports Department.
