Chennai Collector Rashmi Siddharth Jagade has initiated the Manjapai Awards, aimed at recognizing schools, colleges, and businesses leading in promoting a plastic-free environment. Inspired by the `Meendum Manjapai` campaign, the awards commend entities banning single-use plastics and adopting eco-friendly alternatives like the manjapai (yellow cloth bag).
Environment and Climate Change Minister Meiyanathan announced the awards during the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly session for fiscal year 2023-24. Winners, including three top-performing institutions from each category, will receive prizes of Rs. 10 lakh, Rs. 5 lakh, and Rs. 3 lakh, respectively.
Interested entities can access application forms on the District Collectorate`s website at https://chennai.nic.in/ until the deadline of 1st May. Forms, accompanied by necessary documents, must be submitted to the District Collector for evaluation overseen by the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board.
