Traffic diversions in Chennai have been creating lots of issues for many now. It is true that the residents are finding it difficult to reach their destinations on time due to these traffic diversions. It is worthy to note that the traffic diversions are now made to ensure speedy construction of metro rail phase 2.
The important piece of news that has come out now is that the prime localities in Chennai such as Nungambakkam and Chetpet etc would have more traffic diversions soon. It is known that metro rail phase 2 would cover 116km and it would have more than 100 stations. Point is that Chetpet, Sterling Road, Nungambakkam and Anna Flyover would be part of corridor 3.
At Sterling Road and at Chetpet, the initial work of constructing the metro stations has started and soon full fledged traffic diversions would come into effect. As per some commuters, some of the traffic diversions that have been implemented already have been creating issues.
According to an auto driver in Chennai, those coming from Chetpet would have to take a roundabout route of travelling through Haddows Road to reach Sterling Road. He spoke about how he travels 2 km extra every day and how he has been forced to spend more money on petrol. He added that it would not be possible to go directly from Harrington Road to Spur Tank Road but would have to go all the way to Dr. Guruswamy Bridge and then take a U-turn to go to Spur Tank Road.
Previously, travelling between Chetpet and T. Nagar would take just 10 minutes but now with the traffic diversions travelling between these 2 places takes about half hour especially in the peak hours.
Now, many residents want the traffic authorities to communicate about the traffic diversions in advance and want additional traffic policemen to help them.
