Starting today, all Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) in Tamil Nadu will dispatch driving licenses and motor vehicle documents via Speed Post, rather than handing them over to applicants, their representatives, or touts.
Similar to the passport application process, individuals will now apply for licenses and documents online through the government`s Vahan or Sarathy portal. They will then attend tests at designated RTOs. Smart cards will be dispatched by Speed Post the same day.
State Transport Commissioner A. Shanmuga Sundaram has instructed all RTOs to collect contact details of applicants. India Post will then send text messages to applicants` mobile phones, enabling them to track the delivery status of their smart cards.
If applicants are unavailable during delivery, the package will be returned to the RTO. To receive the card again, applicants must visit the office with a self-addressed envelope affixed with the required postage stamp, for re-dispatch through Speed Post.
The State Transport Department is expected to dispatch close to five lakh posts every month, with one official from each zone designated to coordinate with various government agencies involved.
Tamil Nadu Sports Development Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin will inaugurate this system on Wednesday.
Transportation activist R. Rengachari welcomed the initiative, noting its potential to reduce corruption. However, he emphasized that complete elimination of touts would only occur when all vehicle-related services are conducted online. He pointed out that only 30 of the 50 services offered by RTOs are available online.
