From Korukkupet in Chennai to Guwahati in Assam, a freight express train has started. Through this single train service, the railway dept would get Rs 11.25 lakhs as revenue. Sounds incredible right!!
It must be recalled that in 2020 to improve the freight movement on railways, a business development committee was established. It is learnt that the members of this group took several initiatives to improve freight transport on railways.
Various initiatives that were taken by the members of the above said group were redesigning train coaches to carry various types of goods like automobiles etc, providing facilities at the railway stations for easy handling of goods, making direct contact with big companies for carrying goods on railways and providing special concessions etc. AS a result, the freight traffic began to increase. Currently, efforts are being taken to carry goods quickly and safely to cities that are far away from the Chennai city.
In this scenario, first freight express train services have started now from Korukkupet in Chennai to Azara railway station in Guwahati in Assam. It was later brought out by some officials from the railways dept that the express train would depart from Chennai and travel about 2500 kms via Vijayawada and Kolkata etc to reach Guwahati in Assam state. The distance would be covered in 72 hours. It is now said that the freight express train would travel from Chennai to Guwahati atleast twice a month. The freight express train is expected to carry 364 tonnes per trip for the first 6 months.
