Chennais Unified Ticketing System Gains Momentum Post Lok Sabha Election!

The development of a unified ticketing system for Chennai is set to accelerate after the Lok Sabha election results are announced and the model code of conduct is withdrawn. Currently, new initiatives are restricted due to the code of conduct. The idea of a unified ticketing system, allowing passengers to use the same ticket for all State-run public transport networks in Chennai like the Metro Rail, MTC buses, and suburban trains, has been under consideration for some time.

The Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (CUMTA) has initiated a tender process to establish this system, which will include an app and other necessary facilities. However, the tender process has been paused due to the lengthy duration of the seven-phase Lok Sabha election and the enforced model code of conduct, which will be in place until the results are declared on June 4. It`s expected to pick up pace once the model code is lifted.

Once the winning bidder is selected, the contract will be awarded, leading to the implementation of the common ticketing system within a few months. Several features are being considered, such as an app, QR code-based tickets, and a dedicated card for seamless usage across all State-run transport utilities in Chennai.
