Just similar to what computer science engineering courses did in the 2000s, AI or Artificial Intelligence courses have brought a boom in engineering education now.
Gone are the days when engineering subjects like civil, mechanical, electrical etc attracted the students. Now, the students are attracted more towards computer related and AI courses.
More than 2 lakh applications have been received by TNEA or Tamil Nadu Engineering Admission committee on Thursday, 23rd of May. The students have now shown huge interest to pursue engineering due to the huge scope of AI or artificial intelligence. Information collected is that 1.48 lakh candidates have paid the fees and 1.09 lakh have uploaded their documents.
In 2023, 2.238 lakh students registered their applications and out of which 1.87 lakh took part in the counselling process. Now, 10percent more applications are expected this year and this was according to some officials. In more than 440 engineering colleges in TN, 1.7lakhs seats would be available. Decreasing interests in basic science courses like BSc (Maths), BSc (Physics) and BSc (Chemistry) etc have led to more applications for engineering counselling. This was according to some career consultants.
The cap for the engineering seats for 2024-25 has been removed by AICTE or All India Council for Technical Education. This has allowed the engg colleges to increase their intake of students.
It was later mentioned by Anna University VC Mr. Velraj that more students show preference to engineering courses than basic science courses due to more job opportunities for the engineering courses. He threw light on how about there is an increased awareness now about AI and computer related courses.
He concluded that computer science related subjects are also promoted in the schools more now. As per the principal of SSN College of Engineering, Mr. V. E. Annamalai, AI has brought a boom to engineering education now.
