Converting diesel buses into compressed natural gas or CNG buses seems to be a fantastic idea right!!
It is now said that TNTD or Tamil Nadu Transport Dept has planned to conduct a trial operation for the above mentioned work.
Information collected is that 2 buses belonging to MTC Chennai, TNSTC Villupuram, Kumbakonam and Madurai would be converted into CNG buses. This was according to some source belonging to the transport dept.
It is learnt that CNG kits would be installed on the buses and the buses would be taken to get the approval from RTOs to convert them from diesel to CNG fuel type. Only after getting the approval from RTOs, the buses would be put under trial operation and this was according to some sources. In future, there would be installation of CNG kits in more buses if this upcoming trial operation becomes successful.
It is worth noting that the price of one kilo of CNG in Chennai now is Rs 86 whereas one litre of diesel costs Rs 92.34. By converting diesel buses into CNG bases, the transport dept would be saving 20percent on the fuel costs.
It was already announced by MTC that it would be procuring 600 electric buses and the trial for the conversion from diesel buses to CNG buses has come at this point of time. It is known that MTC has floated 2 tenders to procure electric buses.
Under the KfW funded project, MTC has floated bids to procure 100 electric buses. Under the Gross Cost Contract or GCC project, MTC has floated tenders to procure 500 low floor electric buses. This includes 400 non-air-conditioned buses and 100 air-conditioned buses.
