All high rise structures are expected to have necessary safety precautions prescribed by the National Building Code (NBC) norms. Sadly this is not followed by many of the multi storey apartments and other tall buildings constructed in the city. Deputy Director of the Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services (TNFRS) Vijay Sekar acknowledges this fact.
.
According to the NBC norms, minimum two staircases must be built in the multi storey buildings and one must function as a fire exit staircase. However, the CMDA says that it has been very difficult to ensure these precautions in its strict sense due to the lack of adequate manpower. Even leading builders find it very difficult to implement the fire safety precautions.
