The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) plans to transform the area beneath the Velachery flyover into a recreational space with public amenities, costing an estimated Rs 20 crore.
An official stated that while the Greater Chennai Corporation currently maintains the flyover, the CMDA will add a walking track, an open gym, and a children`s play area beneath it. Tenders have been issued for the project, which includes greening the flyover pillars with creeper plants, installing seating, and providing sufficient LED lighting. The aim is to make the area a pleasant recreational spot for locals.
The project will also benefit MTC passengers, as the nearby Velachery bus stand will be upgraded with a waiting area, toilets, CCTV cameras, and a public address system. Both arms of the flyover, which connect Velachery Bypass Road with Tambaram Main Road and Tiruvanmiyur with Velachery Main Road, are included in the beautification plans.
