How would you react if you come to know that you might die within 48 hours if you get infected by a certain type of bacteria? Absolutely shocked right!!

Streptococcal Toxic Shock Syndrome or STSS has been deadly in Japan now leading to many deaths within 48 hours. Recently, there has been a huge rise in the number of cases of rare disease caused by flesh eating bacteria. It is now said that this outbreak could be due to the relaxation in Covid19 restrictions.

The NIID or National Institute for Infectious Diseases has revealed that by 2nd June Japan has recorded 977 STSS cases. This has overtaken last year`s record of 941 cases. Group A Streptococcus or GAS bacteria has been responsible for this STSS in Japan. The progression of this STSS in persons has been very fast and due to this reason many deaths occur within just 48 hours.

Persons affected would show many symptoms like pain in limbs and swelling, fever, low BP, necrosis, breathing issues etc. Information gathered is that individuals who are above the age of 50 are more prone to get this STSS.

As per a professor Mr Ken Kikuchi of Tokyo`s Women Medical University it was clear that the deaths occur within 48 hours.

It must not be forgotten that in late 2022 as many as 5 European nations reported a rise in the number of STSS cases to WHO or World Health Organisation.

Preventive steps :

It is noteworthy that maintaining hand hygiene is very important. Open wounds etc must be treated immediately to prevent the spread of this flesh eating bacteria.

According to the US Centre for Disease Control and Prevention or CDC it was clear that anybody could get STSS but it is more common in those who are more than 65 years of age. Point is that persons who are diabetic or have alcohol use disorder have more chances of getting STSS.

Mortality rate of 30% also possible:

It was brought to light by the professor Ken Kikuchi that if the current infection rate continues then Japan could have 2500 cases in 2024 with mortality of 30 percent.
