Life is not easy for arthritis patients. There are many who suffer from the issue of osteoarthritis and due to this their movements are restricted. These patients have now got some hope in the form of a minimal invasive intervention treatment.

For relief from osteoarthritis pain, GAE or Genicular Artery Embolisation, a minimally invasive procedure is being provided for the patients.

On Friday, 21st June 2024, a webinar titled `Regain Your Pain Free Knee without Surgery took place in Chennai jointly organised by MIOT Hospitals and The Hindu. The superb piece of information is that this procedure would provide relief from pain for osteoarthritis patients for atleast 2 to 3 years.

What is GAE procedure?

It is a pinhole procedure that requires local anaesthesia. Here, a fine catheter guided by a specialized X-ray machine would be inserted to inject inert medical grade plastic particles that would block the blood flow to inflammation. This would lead to new and abnormal blood vessels and nerve fibres in the knee. After the procedure, the patient would not get any scar and he or she would have to stay in the hospital for just 24 hours. Within the next 48hours, the patient would be relieved of knee pain.

What is the arthritis issue?

It is a non-reversible degenerative age related issue where there would be thickening of the lubricating synovial membrane in the joints. As a result, the soft tissue cartilage that is present between the knee joints would break down causing severe pain. The cost of the treatment is Rs 1.70 lakhs.
