As the metro trains are affordable and highly comfortable, many people in Chennai travel in the metro trains now. To help these passengers, CMRL has taken the important decision of purchasing 28 new trains with six coaches. Sound`s incredible isn`t it!!
In Chennai, along 2 routes for a distance of 54km from Airport to Wimco Nagar and from Parangimalai to Chennai Central metro trains run. Every day, an average of 2lakh to 3lakh people travel in the metro trains.
In this situation, the CMRL has now planned to purchase 28 new trains with 6 coaches as the number of passengers has been increasing every day. It must be recalled that in 2023 CMRL has sent a proposal to the TN govt for its approval. In August 2023, the TN govt approved this and then it was sent to the Central govt for approval.
In June 2024, Niti Aayog gave its approval regarding the purchase of new metro trains. It was brought out by CMRL that after getting approval from the Central govt new metro trains would be purchased.
The Managing Director of CMRL, Mr. M.A. Siddique explained that at present the metro trains would be able to meet the demands of the passengers for up to one and half years only. He added that afterwards new metro trains would have to be purchased compulsorily. He concluded that an effort was made to purchase 28 new metro trains of 6 coaches and that the CMRL was expecting approval from the central govt .
Important piece of information is that CMRL has planned to procure 28 new trains of six coaches at a cost of Rs 2820.9 crores and Asian Development Bank would provide the necessary funds.
