As a part of TN government`s initiative pertaining to increasing revenue through property tax, professional tax, GST, property registration and commercial connections in Tangedco or TN Generation and Distribution Corporation, GCC or Greater Chennai Corporation and other agencies would start using data analytics and GIS or geographic information systems.
For property tax registration, GCC has already collected a lot of data through drone surveys and GIS etc. As per the drone survey it was very clear that 3.1lakh buildings were reportedly bigger in size than what was revealed in the records. The reassessment of the buildings was taken up in several wards. Point is that the councillors demanded GCC to resolve the issues in the property tax assessment, re-assessment and collections etc.
It is worthy to note that there has been some disparity among the residents in paying property tax for the same apartment complexes. This was pointed out by Chidambara Perumal Jayyavarapu of Padi Kuppam Road. He spoke about how some residents were paying less than Rs 100 while the others have been paying more than Rs 1000 for the same housing board apartment complexes. Tax calculation and collection would become more accurate by means of data analytics.
According to a councillor belonging to ward 88, the issue of disparity in the property tax from the developed areas of Anna Nagar and Ambattur was brought to light by the residents. The councillor spoke about how in the past few years the councillors have been discussing the high property tax rates in Ambattur and low tax property tax paid by Anna Nagar residents at the council meetings.
It was mentioned by a Velachery resident that GCC has sent teams a few years back to visit houses and to take measurements for re-assessment.
