The city Corporation has raised the penalty for cattle owners whose cattle are found roaming on the roads. The fine has been increased to Rs 10,000 from Rs 5,000, following a resolution passed in the council meeting on Tuesday.

Stray cattle are impounded in shelters at Pudupet and Perambur under the supervision of the public health department and traffic inspectors. Previously, in September 2023, the penalty was raised from Rs 2,000 to Rs 5,000, and the maintenance charge from the third day of impoundment was increased from Rs 200 to Rs 1,000 per day.

Currently, owners are fined Rs 5,000 per cattle, with an additional Rs 1,000 per day as a maintenance charge from the third day onwards. In 2023, over 4,200 cattle were seized, resulting in Rs 92.04 lakh in fines. As of July 2024, 1,425 cattle have been caught, and Rs 59.08 lakh in fines have been collected.

Despite these measures, complaints of stray cattle and incidents of cattle attacks continue. To address this, the fine has now been doubled to Rs 10,000, with a maintenance charge of Rs 1,000 per day from the third day. For repeat offenses, the penalty has been increased to Rs 15,000, up from the previous Rs 10,000.
