Ward Councillors have urged the Mayor and Corporation Commissioner to implement property tax on those who received patta for poromboke land. D Vishwanatha, chairman of the standing committee on education, suggested that except for land near water bodies, property tax should be levied on all such lands.
In response, Mayor Priya agreed to propose this to the State government. D Elango, chairman of the standing committee on town planning, also called for the collection of overdue property taxes from large organizations, the imposition of penalties, and commercial taxes for guest house owners who currently only pay property taxes.
The council approved a resolution to clear travel expenses of Rs 8.68 lakh for Mayor Priya’s trip to the US, where she attended the 37th Tamil Sangam conference from July 4-6. The Federation of Tamil Sangams of North America had requested the Chennai Metropolitan Corporation to cover these expenses, with Rs 5 lakh allocated in advance. The proposal is pending government approval under the TN Urban Local Bodies Act, Rule 46 B.
